Yesterday's Project

Hello Everyone,

In the spirit of getting my quilts quilted, I loaded another on to my long arm yesterday.  This time is was my Which Way Is North? quilt.  You can find the pattern here.

If you remember this quilt was put together as part of an online bee, the Two's Company Bee.

Anyway, I am finally getting around to quilting this top and I love it.  Very scrappy geese.  Many different fabrics were contributed to make this quilt outstanding.  My thanks to all who were part of making this quilt.

Close up of the quilting.  I used a King Tut thread for the quilting.  I am quilting a leaf edge to edge design.

The backing is a Kaffe Fassett fabric, as well as many of the geese, and perfect for this quilt.

The quilt is now quilted and I did cut our the binding and the sleeve!! Yay!  I am usually not that quick, but am truly happy with my progress.

Oh wait, did I say binding.... ooooo that is 2 quilts to bind in 2 days!  Better get going!

Yesterday's Project

Cathedral Window Blocks

Hello Everyone,

You might have wondered why I have been away from my blog for a little bit?  Two words... hand work.  

I must say I am a bad bee member.  Several months ago, Stephanie from Peas In A Pod, had sent us instructions on making some Cathedral Window blocks for the Two's Company Bee.  I must confess... even though I was busy as a bee for the summer months and with the quilt show, these blocks frightened intrigued me.  While I had all intentions of doing them the first week month that I received them, that came to pass.  I hang my head very low... :(

But, now that the quilt show is over and things are starting to get back to some sense of normalcy, I devoted my time to get these blocks done and back to Stephanie.

I had success!!  These are now on their way back to her to add to her two color quilt.  I hope that they will enhance the quilt that you are making Stephanie and please accept my sincerest apologies for the delay.

A few things I learned while doing these blocks...

1.  Hand sewing is definitely slower than using the machine (not really a light bulb moment, I knew this already)

2.  I prefer machine sewing over hand sewing.  Although the one caveat is that I really LOVE hand sewing my binding down... go figure.

3.  These are really pretty blocks.

4.  I have a great admiration for quilters who make quilts totally by hand ~ AWESOME!

5.  I will NEVER make one of these quilts... sorry to disappoint.

But if any of you are so inclined to make one of these quilts, this is the book that Stephanie recommended.

 I must say that the instructions are very clear and concise.  So if you are so inclined to make one of these beauties... go for it!  Just be aware that it may take you a very long time.  Though I do think this is a great project to do while watching TV and riding in the car.

Hopefully now I will get back to some regularly scheduled blogging and oh, I need to do a podcast too!

Cathedral Window Blocks

What Do Strawberries and Kiwi Have In Common?

Hello Everyone,

Aside from the fact that strawberries and kiwi are both fruit, they have been used in this next little project.

Aren't the trimmings yummy??

A great little pile of HSTs (Half Square Triangles).  I used my tutorial which you can find it here.

These HSTs were made for Nifty for the Two's Company Bee.  May is her month.  Her block was not really a traditional block, she requested a strip of HSTs in greens and reds.  Most of you know me and how I love bright saturated color, so it wasn't hard for me to find these colors in my stash.

Here is Nifty's strip of HSTs.  It will be off to you on Monday! There are 12 HSTs in the strip.  I really like how this one looks.

Here is a close up of 6 of the HSTs.  Now these are some strawberries and kiwi, I can make over and over and never ever get tired.

Hello Everyone,

Remember when I showed this quilt in progress.  It is still in progress.  This is the quilt that is my Two's Company Bee project.

February was my month and I sent all the participant's paper foundations and the background fabric.  Then they had to use wild red fabrics for the geese. 

This is how far along the quilt is right now.  I am still waiting on a few more blocks to arrive.  So looking forward to completing this quilt!!

The fabrics that everyone chose are just fabulous!!

Bear Paw

Hello Everyone,

March's block for the Two's Company Bee was for Mary.  She requested a Bear Paw block.  

She provided the white background with the little bit of blue and we had to provide the blue fabrics.

I really enjoyed doing this block!  I know that the HSTs are reading almost black in the photo but they are a dark blue, so not to worry Mary.  Although you probably have already received your block by now.  I hope you like it!

Bear Paw

What Did I Do Over 3 Days?

Hello Everyone,

On Friday, I took the train into NYC to see my friend Victoria of Bumble Beans and spent the weekend.  You probably know that if you read my post on Sunday.  But as soon as I got there I asked Victoria if I could make one of her Triangles Galore blocks to add to her growing collection.

We had fun picking the fabrics for the block and this is what I created!  

Here it is playing nicely with the other blocks that she made.  Victoria has a tutorial for this block if you would like to give it a try.  While there we also worked together to turn it into a Paper Pieced block.  She now has a PDF available for a free download if you would like to Paper Piece this block.

Also, while there I made my Cherrywood challenge block for the NYC Metro Mod guild meeting.  I chose this palette and am happy with how it played with the other blocks that were made!  Looks a bit like and Easter egg.

What Did I Do Over 3 Days?

Totally Forgot to Post These Snowballs....

Hello Everyone,

December's Two's Company Bee Blocks were for Helen.  I did finish them in December, as well as sent them to her and posted on the Two's Company Blog.  But totally forgot to post it here for all of you to see.

Helen requested scrappy whites and reds in the snowball block.  To my surprise, I actually had quite a few white on white prints in my stash.  I think I had purchased them years ago, but they were totally perfect for these blocks.

How many of you purchase fabric that you totally forget about??  It seems to be a like a little present to yourself when they are rediscovered.

So these four little blocks were sent off to Helen and she really liked them and boy and I glad!  Now her snowball fight can begin!

In The Nick of Time...

Hello Everyone,

Whew!  I made it and with no time left to spare. I finished up my November block for the Two's Company Bee last night!  It will be on its way to Jessica today.  Luckily she lives only one state away, so she may have it by Saturday!!

Jessica, so sorry it took so long, but after all it took me almost two months to complete Shelly's block...

Anyway, Jessica's two color quilt is brown and blue and made up by starting with...

a pile of these... HST's!  I used my own method for which I have a tutorial.  You can find the tutorial by clicking here.

These HST's came out to 4.5 inches unfinished.  Now to trim and do the layout.

This looks like a good layout.

Joined together and spritzed with a little bit of Mary Ellen's Best Press so it lays nice and flat...  Voila!  I hope you like the fabrics that I chose, Jessica.  This is going to be a fabulous quilt!  Enjoy!

In The Nick of Time...

I Did It!!

Hello Everyone,

Many thanks to Shelly, I stepped a little bit out of my comfort zone and did some needle turn applique! It took me a while, (one month late) but I did the best that I could and think that it turned out pretty well.  Plus it is on its way to you, Shelly.

I used Kaffe Fassett fabrics and Australian Aboriginals.  

All the handwork was done on various airplane flights, so it definitely kept me from getting bored like I do on flights... kept me busy and entertained.

The only thing that I am not too happy with is the way the center meets up.  Shelly if you don't like it please feel free to rip them out and redo the center leaves.  I am sure you will do what is right for you and I totally will not be offended.  Extra leaves were sent along to you, just in case.

Oh, by the way, this block is part of the Two's Company Bee.

I Did It!!

Hello Everyone,

It is now month two of the Two's Company Bee. This month was Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts month.

She sent me a square of aqua and a strip of white fabric. I needed to add some red and to use this Tutorial for the block.

I must say this is the first time I mad a WONKY star and really enjoyed the process. It was quite easy to do as well.

The block is made and on its way back home. I hope you enjoy it Amanda Jean. Thanks for the chance to make this fun block.

Red Asterisk

Hello Everyone,

I bet you can't believe that I have NEVER been involved in a Bee! Yeah, me too! So when my friend Andrea invited me to join the Two's Company Bee, inspired by the Red And White Quilt Show that was in NYC in March, I jumped at the chance. After all who wouldn't want a red and white quilt?

So first up was Tara's block!

She sent everyone their own fat quarter of red fabric and we needed to add the white. My red piece was plaid. I really liked how it turned out too.

It was a paper pieced block and you all know how I love paper piecing. So this block was meant for me. She explains how to make this block on the Two's Company Blog. I hope Tara likes it too!
