Hello Everyone,
Remember when I opened my new studio, I had mentioned that I would be putting design walls up to cover the length of both walls in the room?? Well we finally got to do it yesterday. My hubby had the day off from work and we went to town!!
But he was totally awesome, because on Sunday while I was teaching in NY, he went to Lowes to get the foam insulation boards so that I could wrap the fleece around them. Let me tell you he did not have an easy time and needed to get 19 of them!!!
Anyway you can see one here wrapped in the fleece. Unfortunately he got the kind that had the foil on both sides... which also had writing. Guess what happens then??? You can see it through the fleece.
Oh well, people are going to have their quilts, blocks, and fabrics on top of them anyway. Plus you can pin into these too!
Here is the studio when we were first getting down to business. Notice it was still daylight outside and we really don't have much done yet.
Lots of boards waiting to be covered and we were waiting for my son to arrive with more tools that we needed.
Son arrived and we had a dilemma... how we were attaching the boards to the wall wasn't working out so well. After many tries, my son had some genius ideas. Two trips out, one to the hardware store and one to Lowes, he came back with exactly what we needed!
Thanks to my son we managed to really get going on getting the walls up.
Hubby was very happy about this as he and I were both getting frustrated and thought we would never get them up. Notice it is no longer day light outside.
Ahhhh... sweet progress! A quick dinner from Mickey D's and a break for my son for some homework, then we really kicked it into high gear.
Team work was the key and we all worked well together and finally got a rhythm going.
Ahhhhh... all the design walls are up and waiting for quilts and projects to be hung by students.
And look at TEAM CVQW... are they happy or what???
More so, I am happy and very grateful to have two wonderful guys in my life to help me make this possible. Thanks to both of you, you are awesome and I love you!
The left wall is completely lined with design boards and...
so is the right wall! I LOVE it!!
Yes, we got home late and the cats were hungry, but they forgave us and were fed immediately.
Until Next Time...

Wow, that's a lot of design wall. Lucky you had such great helpers!
That is wonderful! Wished I lived closer to see it in a class!
Congratulations on your design walls. They look great. My DH put up a design wall for my sewing room. Here is a link to my blog about the process. Maybe you don't care, since yours are complete, but, like you, we went through quite a process.

The design walls look fantastic, Jackie! What a cool studio...
that is so nice for your room to have all that design wall space - the people who attend your classes and workshops will love it!!
Looks great!! So. What's the secret? How were they attached to the wall? I have some wall space and would like to do something like this in my sewing room but maybe 1/2 the size.
What a great team you have there! Cant' wait o come USE those design walls! ;-)
Looks great! What type of fleece did you use? I'm just curious. I was thinking of using the Warm and Natural batting that I have on hand, I haven't had a design wall yet so I am not sure how well the batting will work. Actually, anything will be better that my design floor! My sewing room is in the process of being put together. I can finally move my sewing area out of the living room!
Your studio looks Fantastic!! I love when you show pictures of it. You can never have too much design wall. Your boys are awesome.
That's a HUGE job! I bet it sounds much different in there now, too. :D So.... what is my problem getting a few smaller boards of my own actually together and up???
So glad it all worked out. My friend Ricci and her husband Sam were in charge of putting up the design walls at Superior Threads. They wrapped the front of the insulations boards with batting first, stapled it down and then put them up on the wall with heavy duty velcrow tabs. It works well and they can take them down and replace the batting if needed.
I LOVE it! And I want to know the secrets to attaching them too! What type of walls do you have and how did you attach them? Also looking for answers to others' questions e.g. fleece vs. warm and natural. I've never had a design wall and recently claimed my daughters' bedroom! that is painted hot pink....we filled it before painting it and now thinking my best option is to just cover the walls with design boards But we have lathe and plaster in a 80 yo house. Would love any tips. And SO wish I lived near you to come play
I used your directions to make my own design wall and also had to get the kind of rigid insulation that had printing on both sides. I found, however, that the thin mylar sheet peeled off easily, leaving a white surface, which I then covered with warm and white batting. We hung our boards horizontally (and stacked) using eye hooks the fastened to the back of the board (fastened with screws and duck tape), then used wide velcro with adhesive backing to make the boards hug the wall. I LOVE my design board!!
Wow! Great guys. Handsome too! Nothing like great big design walls to inspire creativity!
Looks great! I'm doing the same in my sewing room. FYI - the foil easily peels off.
Handsome crew you have there! I need to do that. I just have flannel hanging from my closet trim. Need something more rigid.
I like your chairs... Where did you find those?
Great job!
A productive day & the design walls look great!!! Looking forward to using them sometime soon!!
Justine
Jackie, your studio is fabulous! Great job!!
