The Lure Of Orange

Hello Everyone,

Don't you just love the color orange? This Sunday my Mod Conn Quilt Guild will be meeting (if you live in CT and would like more info either leave a comment or send me an e-mail) and this time we were challenged to use the color orange in a 12.5 inch block.

I thought about it for a little while and knew exactly what I wanted to make! A Drunkard's Path block, a little bit revamped.

I took a bunch of orange fabric from my stash and cut them with the Drunkard's Path Die on my AccuQuilt Studio Cutter. Love that!

Then I joined them together, but it was not done yet. It is only 9.5 inches at this point. So I dug deeper into my orange stash and then added these...

A scrappy border. Every fabric is different and every fabric is very orange. I think I might just need to make an entire quilt like this! I love this block! My son's favorite color is orange, so this could be on the agenda this year for a wonderful quilty Christmas gift.

I am looking forward to seeing what everyone else created. I will make sure to bring you some photos of all of them!

What do you think of orange? What do you think of this block, would it look good in an entire quilt?

Until Next Time...

Truthfully, I think I tend to forget about orange-- but your block is making me love it!! Pardon my language, but that is a kick-butt block you made! Great idea to make a whole quilt for your son. Can you email me the quilt guild info? Thanks!

As soon as I saw this post, I wanted to be the first to say -- LOVE IT! As you know, I just finished my own orange quilt (which is now my favorite). Even after all the orange, I still want to make another one. I sure hope you do an entire quilt - because I think orange is such a great "pop" in life.

I've never been an orange person but I think the heat of summer has drawn me to the juiciness of orange. Great block for an entire quilt.

I love orange -- though I haven't made a quilt with it yet. I've been collecting pieces for awhile and hope I still love it when I get around to it! Your block is stunning -- it would make a great quilt! Hope to see it complete!

Orange, especially the deeper burnt orange, rust color, is one of my very favorite colors. I love fall and all the colors of fall! Beautiful block...I'd love to see an entire quilt made with it!!!

Hi Jackie, I love this color. I think that it´s a cheerful color and combines well with green. Try it. See you soon...

I totally love the juiciness of your orange block and think a quilt made of it would be great.

I have been having an orange love affair for this whole year. In fact, I think I have most of the fabrics in your photo and they look marvelous together. Orange also looks wonderful with purple -- I'm making a BOM quilt with those two colors predominant right now! :)

I adore orange, in fact sometimes I have to make sure I'm not using it as it creeps into all of my quilts. Yours is gorgeous. xo

I love orange and your block is wonderful. I was looking at my stash the other day and noticed that I have fewer orange fabrics than any other color. Note to self...

Orange is a new favorite color of mine. In fact, when I need a boost of energy and confidence, I wear something orange - socks, a jacket, something. The block is a winner, and I do think it would look nice in a quilt, although I envision it set off with alternate blocks.

Over time, I have learned that any boring quilt can be brought to life with a spark of orange. Well, it looks like you are on fire, girl! Lovin' your blaze!!!

I've never seen so much orange fabric.. It looks fantastic. I do think it would look better in a quilt with some blue blocks to balance it.

Love it!! And now I see MORE orange fabrics that I must have!!!! I am working on a flying geese zig zag quilt in orange and white - call it my creamsicle. It is so fun and cheery to work on!!!

Jackie~ love this block and it looks great in orange! I NEVER choose orange...that is until lately since there are really great choices out there. A quilt like that would be grand!

An entire quilt of blocks like this would be stunning! The block is beautiful, fresh and oh, so cheerful!

I have never made an all orange quilt but you have me tempted after seeing that block. I can see a couple blocks leaning slightly into yellow and a couple leaning into red to give it some pizazz.

My brother's favorite color is organge because when he was little, all the other colors were picked, Red-me, Green-mom, Blue-dad, Yellow-sis so he got stuck with Orange! I love the orange block. I'm needing to make a quilt and have been thinking of making the drunkard's path block with the Accuquilt die. How easy is it to sew together? I like the idea of throwing the border around it to make it bigger so less curved seams :)

Orange is my new favorite color in a quilt, and I've been collecting quite a few orange fat quarters. Your design is lovely. Have fun with your group!

It's like a blazing sun over the desert. Love it!. A whole quilt might be a little overwhelming though, you might want to slip a couple of contrasting blocks in to give your eyes a rest.

Lately I can't get enough of orange! As I was choosing new colors for my site, I was fixated on warm orange, hot pink, and sunny yellow. It inspired me to make a quilt using fabrics in these colors. You can see them in this post: http://www.favequilts.com/Techniques-and-Videos/How-to-Make-a-Quilt-Preparing-Your-Fabric

I think it would be really overwhelming to have a whole quilt that color, but I'm not a big fan of orange or yellow. Maybe something across a fall color scheme, with mustards and hunter greens and browns mixed in, instead? :)

I have always loved orange - my friends tease me. I think the batiks are terrific with that block. I just saw a red/white drunkard's path today online and it was fabulous - need to think about that.

I think it would be a beautiful quilt! I love the color, the fruit, and the popsicle...I don't know why I don't think to put it in my quilts very often. I must remedy this!

You asked if I like orange - if I stop to think about it I would say not really - but I have a lot of it in my home decor and my in my quilts - although I rarely wear orange.

I think you could make a whole quilt with orange - but I would make sure to include prints that contain other colors - just keep it predominantly orange - then it will read as an orange quilt. I have a quilt that I refer to as the purple quilt - but it has a ton of other colors.

That is a very pretty block but a whole quilt of all orange would probably run together into one big orange blob - unless you separated the blocks with another color sashing. Or unless there was a lot of contrast between the oranges.

I love orange. The only thing is - light orange is "peach" - not a fan of that color! So hard for me to do darks and lights with orange :)

I have been in love with everything orange this summer. I think those blocks would make a great quilt.

My Son (23) has always loved orange and lime green. It seems like those colors have come into style lately. I think a quilt with all the colors of the rainbow would look great. An entire orange quilt? Why not? It sure would be fun and interesting.
