Blue Whirlygig

Hello Everyone,

On Sunday, along with my napping kitties in my last post, I was able to get a little sewing time in for myself. I was happy!

Remember my Saturday sew-a-thon with my friend Karen. You can read this post here. I was part way done with my blue whirlygig block. On Sunday, I was able to complete it, yay!!

I just love it too! The spikes are paper pieced and made from scraps in my scrap bin.

Paper piecing allows you to get these perfect points. That is one of the main reasons that I love this technique. I use Carol Doak's Foundation paper to print the arcs. It is great for paper piecing, it is most like newsprint.

This whole block is machine pieced with the exception of the middle circle. That is machine appliqued. My friend Karen, was doing machine applique on the Saturday that I was there and offered to do the 3 circles that I needed to be attached to the whirlygig.

She used an invisible thread on the top and neutral in the bottom. A stitch similar to a blanket stitch was used, more like a blind hem type stitch. She did a fantastic job! Thanks, Karen!

In this particular photo you can see where each quarter arc meets. Two different fabrics form one spike. I like that sort of a little surprise in each block and it makes it more interesting too. Don't you think?

Here is another triangle surprise.

Ahhh, the complete block. It makes my heart sing. Three down and six more to go... or maybe more.

Next time I would like to share with you my vision for this quilt and where the inspiration is coming from to create this beautiful top.

On another note, if you like black and white fabrics I will be ordering them for my online shop and have them available to you soon!

Until Next Time...

I love that pattern and thinking how fun it would be to use kids fabrics or something mod that a teen would like.

Fantastic job, Jackie! I love paper piecing, too now that I've finally tried it. I am not in love with paper removal, but will learn to live with it for perfect points...don't you just love that? What kind of paper do you recommend for those of us who prefer printing from the computer?
Thanks in advance,
Heather

Your whirligig is wonderful! And yeah for black and white prints! Hope they arrive soon.
Did you piece the curved part also--not paper piece, of course, but piece rather than applique?

What a fun block! I've very little experience with paper piecing. I do remember being very frustrated with it and wasting gobs of fabric. I guess as you become more proficient at it, the less fabric you waste. Maybe I'll try again someday.

Very cool! I love the little triangles that look like they were pieced where the quarter blocks join. :-)

I know when you get these blocks together I'm going to want to start paper piecing again. Your block is fabulous and I love the Black and whites. Great job and brilliant idea to use the machining for the swirls.

I love it and such a good use for the white with black fabrics. It looks kind of fussy and time consuming, but we all have to make one of them now and then.

Love all the color with the fun black and white fabrics. A really terrific block with tons of interest.

I learned how to machine applique in a class and made an entire quilt using that method. Haven't done it since for some reason.

and glad your going to carry black and white in your shop, they are not easy to find...
I enjoy paper piecing have to find out where the pattern is for this...
ok I love suprises in quilts like this and tend to do the same thing make my own fabric for a piece in a block or use a different fabric in one of the sections of the block than I did normally for the quilt
going to write a post today about a little quilt I just made and will highlight that little block in my quilt too1
wonder if people could find it otherwise?
great post
thanks
