Nature

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, I was so excited when my cats saw this..

...an absolutely beautiful Pileated Woodpecker.  This is only the second time I have ever seen one so close and in our yard.  The first time, was about 14 years ago.

If you have never seen one of these beautiful birds they are large and noisy!  Noisy when they are pecking your tree.

I took a bunch of photos, but these are really the best out of them.  His head truly is a bright red and he has those gorgeous stripes down his neck.  A true sight to behold.  I say "he" because this was a male.  I provided a link below where you can read more about this bird.

Because he was moving his head so quickly, I had the camera on sport mode and just kept snapping.  You can click on the photos to enlarge for more detail.

He then flew over to one of our pine trees and was pecking under there for a little bit.  I swear I could have watched him all day.

You can click here for more information on the Pileated Woodpecker.

I hope you enjoyed this walk through nature interlude.

Don't forget to enter the giveaway going on here.

Until Next Time...

Wow!! That's beautiful Jackie. Woodpeckers in general are hard to see. There are some green ones in our local park but hardly ever do you see them close up. Thanks for sharing, this is a beauty! (love that first shot, so clear and close!)

They're gorgeous and huge and loud!!! I remember the first time we had one in our backyard pecking at a tree. Sounded like a jack hammer. Terrific photos.

Thanks Jackie, he's beautiful. I don't think I've ever seen one before, we have a lot of woodpeckers, but none as beautiful as he is.

We have had one of these beauties occasionally but certainly not regularly. You do have to just stop and watch, don't you? Their flight even makes you stop and watch. They are amazing birds. I am surprised you could get some photos. They move so often it's hard to pin one down. Fun!

We have had one of those in our yard in NH this year. You're right about them being noisy. My cat runs and hides when she hears them.

We have one living in the woods behind us but in three years I've only seen him twice! We hear him daily....

He is a beauty. I know what you mean, it is hard to stop watching one of these, rare as they are to be spotted.

That is one of my favorite birds. The first one I ever saw was in Acadia National Park. We have them in our yard sometimes. They have quite a call when they talk to each other. One time we had three, a mom, a dad and a younger one. They are fun to watch. They have quite a personality.

Oh I am jealous! I've only seen them from a distance on my walks. What a great sight and thanks for sharing the photos!

Lucky girl! We have one around here that I've seen twice at a distance. I'd love to get as close as you did. Thanks for sharing!

Great pictures! We have them nesting in the area so we see them all the time but my pictures have been terrible. Like you I am in awe of their size, beauty, and ability to make huge holes in trees in a short amount of time. And their call sounds like something from the jungles of Africa!

Happy Sewing

Jackie, great photos. I've seen these birds here in upstate NY but never had my camera within reach!

Great pictures of a fantastic bird. Thanks for the pictures. If you subscribe to Netflix they have a documentary on a "sighting" of an Ivory bill woodpecker in Arkansas. "Ghost Bird" Interesting movie. Also they have also been reported in Lousiana and Florida. Would be nice if they could really find survivors.

Very cool! Think he might inspire a quilt? Bet you could figure out a paper pieced pattern for that.

He is gorgeous Jackie, I've only ever seen them on the cartoons! so it would be pretty amazing to have one visit your own backyard. I would have watched him all day too. xo

Last spring we were thrilled to have a pileated in our backyard as well. He came back every day for about a week. Haven't seen him since. what a blessing when we are at the right place at the right time, right?

THIS guy has to get into a quilt! His color and design are begging for a story quilt with him in it!
