What to Do With Those Fabric Panels

Hello Everyone,

Often times we, as quilters, see those beautiful fabric panels and are not quite sure how to integrate them into a quilt. This post shows just one example of how you can use a panel and not have it look like one.

One of my customers, Janet, brings me some beautiful quilts to quilt. Recently, she brought a quilt that is made up of one panel. How she used it was to cut the panel into blocks, then to put sashing in between the blocks and added two borders.

From afar, this quilt looks like a beautifully appliqued quilt. But it is not. The sashing really helps in making it look more like a pieced and appliqued quilt.

Then I added my quilting. I treated it very much like a pieced quilt. It was all custom quilted, with special motifs in each block, border, and sashing.

Each block was also stitched in the ditch to frame it up. Click on the pictures to see the detail.

Janet likes to use a muslin backing. It really shows off the quilting and the detail. So in summary, a panel doesn't have to look like a panel. The piecer has to think outside the box and the quilter needs to treat it like any other quilt.

If any of you have any great ideas or treatments for a panel, I would love to hear about them in your comments or e-mails. Don't forget to listen to my 10th podcast episode all about quilting tools and gadgets. Find it in iTunes or just click on the icon on my left side bar or you can click here.

One last item, you need to go to Lila Tueller's blog to enter the giveaway for a beautiful quilt!

Until Next Time...

Oooooh... not a fan of panels but I LOVE that quilting! It sure does make the quilt special and looking like hand pieced!

Very pretty! I have a friend who makes single blocks quilts out of panels, then embellishes them heavily, they always turn out wonderfully!

That turned out lovely! I just used a panel in a novelty (Olivia Pig) quilt. It was a fun change of pace. I am really not a "quilter" yet just a stitcher and this was fun to use as a BIG block in the middle :-)

I have never used a panel but I have seen several that someone did up rather nicely - this one does look like applique at first doesn't it.
Great quilting!

Your quilting really helps to make this quilt look like an appliqued masterpiece -- that's really thinking outside the block!

That looks wonderful. I have cut up panels and made them into pillow covers for decorative pillows on the sofa. If you embellish them and quilt them nicely, they do look terrific.

I made a Halloween quilt and used a panel as part of the backing. It's very cute! I almost like the back of the quilt better than the front.

I always thought you were supposed to cut the panels and make a quilt with sashing, lol. The quilting is beautiful.

Looks wonderful, Jackie. If I have a panel, I'll cut them and made a set of pillows and table runner or put them each around the edge of simple queen size quilt.

Jackie, This quilt is beautiful. I would love to make one with panels like this. I have made a panel quilt using a wolf panel for my step-son. The link is below if you would like to see it.

He loves it and I really enjoyed doing it. There is so much you can do with a panel no matter what size the panel. Thank you for sharing. Take care and God bless, Cory

Beautiful quilting!

And guess what this slacker just did?!?! I listened to your podcast. Quilting is so visual, I wasn't sure what a podcast would be like, but I loved it! Thanks for mentioning my blog, and I'm so glad you found the tools information useful. I had a little trouble with itunes and couldn't download to my Shuffle (itunes kept closing), so I listened from the computer. I'll have to get my son to get them on the SHuffle for me so I can catch up on all the podcasts I've missed! Looking forward to the next installment of your chronicles :).

I have these same panels. I have used them (one at a time) to practice my free motion quilting on my domestic machine.

Beautiful job quilting this! I did a quilt like this and the quilter did not treat it as you did.GORGEOUS quilting job! Makes me want to do another. I one from Mimi Dietrich from a few years back where you add the trip around the world blocks to it. I think I'll just treat it as this one was. Thanks! Sandra at www.cumberlandislandquiltchick.com
